The unique strain characteristics of LGG®


Strain characteristics and mechanisms of Lactobacillus rhamnosus, LGG®* (here-after referred to as LGG®) have been established through extensive in vitro testing. These studies show that LGG® exhibits acid and bile tolerance and has excellent adherence properties to the intestinal mucosa, both important characteristics to increase persistence of the bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Clinical studies show that LGG® survives through the GI tract and can help restore and maintain the natural balance of good bacteria in the gut. LGG® shows good pathogen inhibition as well as enhancement of the gut barrier function in vitro. Furthermore, LGG® has been demonstrated to support immune interactions and stimulatory effects of immune cells in vitro and in vivo.

Beneficial health effects: LGG® has been tested most extensively in relation to:

  • immune defense against pathogens in the GI tract in children¹
  • antibiotic-associated side effects in adults²
  • the defense against pathogens in the upper respiratory tract in children³
  • beneficial change in response to allergens⁴

The safety of long-term use of LGG® has been demonstrated in several studies. LGG® is considered safe for its intended use as an ingredient⁶ ⁷ in food and dietary supplements to be consumed by a healthy population including infants.
